Gardening
S.A.S. participants planted cool weather crops (broccoli, peas, spinach, lettuce and collards) in the community garden this week, just in time for Earth Day!
Planting tips from Patty: it's time to plant your cool weather vegetables such as peas, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and lettuce. You can also plant flowers now that are able to withstand a light frost such as pansies. You need to wait a few more weeks to safely plant your other flowers and vegetables that are heat lovers such as tomatoes, squashes, cucumbers and peppers. If you are going to garden this year it is a great time to prepare by cleaning up leaves and yard debris, and adding soil fertilizer to your beds.
In our Community Garden, we are hoping to see the plants emerge in a week to ten days. So come out and garden with us in the Community Garden on Wednesdays. We also have individual plots available for those want their own personal garden; contact Patty in SAS if you are interested in gardening this year.

Service Project
Volunteer Club was host to special guests this month, licensed therapy dog "Happe" and her owner Donna M. joined us as we worked on projects to benefit our local animal shelter.
Happe made herself at home, sitting next to Jesse H. She was SO SWEET! |
These are the ingredients we used for homemade dog treats. Whole wheat flour, eggs, canned pumpkin, peanut butter, salt and cinnamon. Click here to go to AllRecipes.com for the full recipe. |
Friends Rebekah R. and Stacy L. are rolling out dough. |
Margaret B. and Larry B. are working together making a dog bone shape out of the dough. |
Terri W. made a variety of shapes. |
Renee P. and Kaja A. |
Terri W. |
Rebekah with a heart shape. |
As these were baking we braided material into ropes for dog toys. If you enjoy service projects, watch the SAS Calendar for a monthly "Volunteer Club" activity. Anyone can join at anytime. |
